Is My Roof Suitable for Solar Panels?
Roof suitability for solar in Malaysia: orientation, shade, structure, covering type, and why apartments are a different problem from landed homes.
What a survey actually checks
Usable plane, azimuth, pitch, shade from trees and neighbouring roofs, water tanks, solar water heaters, and whether the structure can take mounting loads.
Metal and tile roofs are both used in Malaysia; the mounting system changes. A leaking or near-end-of-life roof should be repaired or replaced before it is punctured for rails.
Tropical specifics
Heavy rain, intense sun and soiling from dust or organic debris are normal. Shade in the afternoon from a taller neighbour can matter as much as compass direction.
Not every address is a rooftop site
Stratified towers and many shop-apartment stacks share a roof. Solar ATAP excludes multi-tenant consumers. Get the tenure and TNB account right before quoting panels.
Common questions
Do solar panels work during cloudy weather?
Yes. Panels generate from daylight, not only direct sun. Output is lower on overcast days. Malaysia’s tropical climate still produces useful annual generation, but month-to-month figures vary.
Do I need a battery?
A battery is optional. Many on-grid Solar ATAP systems operate without storage and rely on self-consumption plus export credits. Storage can shift energy into the evening but adds cost and design complexity. It is a site-specific decision.
